The E-Prescribing Waiver module allows the PDMPs to better monitor electronic prescribing compliance through a highly configurable and automated e-prescribing exemption waiver submission process.
Through this process, submitted waivers are able to be reviewed, approved or rejected, and stored within the AWARxE user interface. The E-Prescribing Waiver module includes a comprehensive process for waiver submission, configurable email communications to waiver submitters, State Administrator configurations, State Administrator waiver management process, reporting requirement automation, and State Administrator waiver status reporting.
However, some prescribers may not have an EHR system, capable of e-prescribing. In this instance, the prescriber could apply for an E-Prescribing Waiver for any location they practice out of.
E-Prescribing Waivers are submitted within AWARxE. Therefore, the prescriber must have an AWARxE account, and their role must have permissions to submit a waiver. |
To submit a waiver, navigate to Menu > Waivers > Individual Request for E-Prescribing.
When a prescriber selects the Individual Request for E-Prescribing Waiver menu, the system will perform the following eligibility checks before allowing waiver submission. If one of the checks does not pass, the user is returned to the dashboard and a message will be displayed indicating the reason.
- DEA, NPI, and State License – Prescribers must have a personal DEA, NPI, and State License Number on their AWARxE profile in order to request a waiver.
- Pending waiver - To prevent duplicates, the system does not allow waivers to be submitted if there is a Pending waiver.
- Active waiver - A waiver is active if it has an approved status that has not expired. If the active waiver is not eligible for renewal, they cannot submit another waiver.
If the user passes the eligibility checks, the prescriber's information from the prescriber’s AWARxE profile will display. The prescriber should verify the information is accurate. If any changes need to be made, please refer to the Updating Account Information help article.
Next, enter the names and addresses of the practices for which a waiver is being requested on the Location Details page. The Primary Location will default to the primary employer address and phone number from the prescriber's AWARxE profile. However, edits can be made to this information. An additional location can be added by selecting the Add location button at the bottom. The additional location can also be removed.
The prescriber should then identify the reason they are requesting the waiver and provide supporting details and attachments, if necessary.
- Reason for Request: Select the reason the prescriber needs a waiver.
- Supporting Details: This is a large text box that allows the prescriber to explain why they need a waiver.
- Attach Documents: Supporting documentation can be attached. Up to 5 attachments are allowed. PDF, PNG, and JPG are the allowed file types. The max size allowed per file is 5MB. The file name will display after the document is attached. The document can be removed, if needed.
Finally, the prescriber should review the information they are about to submit.
Prescribers should read the Certification Statements and Disclaimers prior to submitting their E-Prescriber Waiver. |
Upon submission, the prescriber will see confirmation of waiver submission. The prescriber will also be given the option to download a PDF of the waiver request. The prescriber will receive a Pending email if one is configured to be sent.

The prescriber will receive an email when a decision has been made. The email below is an example of an approved waiver.
Expiration and Renewal of Waivers
Renewal reminder emails will be sent to the prescriber when the prescriber is eligible for renewal. Submitting a renewal waiver is the same process as submitting the original waiver as described in this guide.
If a waiver expires, the prescriber will receive an expiration email. A new waiver can be submitted at any time after expiration.
