- Deceased Patient Indicator
- Opioid Antidote/Naloxone Administration Indicator
- Marijuana Registry Indicator
- Opioid Treatment Program Indicator
Some PDMPs may also choose to enable Custom State Indicators to provide additional patient context within the Patient Report. These indicators can highlight important PDMP-specific information, such as deceased patient status, opioid antidote (naloxone) administrations, medical marijuana card status, participation in an opioid treatment program, and other PDMP-supported notifications. Availability and display of these indicators may vary by PDMP.
Deceased Patient Indicator
If enabled by the PDMP, the Deceased Patient Indicator may present on the Patient Report to inform healthcare providers when a death notification has been received for that patient. When a provider looks up a patient, this indicator gives them an immediate, at-a-glance alert that the patient is deceased, helping prevent any new prescriptions or refills from being authorized for someone who has passed away.
By surfacing this important information alongside other patient details, the indicator supports safer prescribing practices, reduces the risk of fraud, and helps providers offer more thoughtful, informed care.
Please refer to the Patient Alerts help article for more information.
Opioid Antidote/Naloxone Administration Indicator
If enabled by the PDMP, and applicable to the Patient, the Opioid Antidote/Naloxone Administration Indicator is an indicator that appears on the Patient Report to inform healthcare providers when a patient has previously received an opioid antidote, such as naloxone or Narcan, to reverse a suspected overdose. When a provider looks up a patient, this indicator gives them quick, at-a-glance awareness that the patient has experienced one or more prior overdose events.
By surfacing this important context alongside other patient health information, the indicator helps providers identify patients who may benefit from additional support, have more informed conversations about safer treatment options, and make thoughtful prescribing decisions that prioritize patient safety.
Please refer to the Opioid Antidote/Naloxone Administration help article for more information.
Medical Marijuana Indicator
If enabled by the PDMP, and applicable to the patient, the Medical Marijuana Indicator appears on the Patient Report to inform healthcare providers that the patient has an active medical marijuana card, when that information has been made available by the applicable PDMP. The indicator is displayed within the State Indicators section of the Patient Report and may also include the card’s expiration date, when available.
This information is intended to provide healthcare providers with additional patient context during their review process. By including medical marijuana status alongside other patient health information, providers can support more informed care decisions and more comprehensive patient discussions.
Opioid Treatment Program Indicator
If enabled by the PDMP, the Opioid Treatment Program Indicator may present on the Patient Report to inform healthcare providers when a patient is actively enrolled in a licensed opioid treatment program, such as a methadone or buprenorphine clinic. When a provider looks up a patient, this indicator gives them quick, at-a-glance awareness that the patient is receiving structured care for opioid use disorder, even though medications dispensed directly by these programs typically don't appear in standard dispensation histories.
By surfacing this important context alongside other patient health information, the indicator aids providers to avoid potentially harmful drug interactions, coordinate care more effectively with the patient's treatment team, and have more supportive, informed conversations about the patient's overall health.
Please refer to the Opioid Treatment Program help article for more information.
